Ferritic stainless steel
LY Steel’s T4003 ferritic stainless steel represents a breakthrough in cost-effective stainless solutions for structural and transport applications, especially within the railway sector. Manufactured to GB/T 4237–2015 standards, T4003 is a low-carbon, low-chromium stainless steel (typically containing around 11–13% Cr and ≤0.03% C) that delivers exceptional strength, weldability, corrosion resistance, and formability. Enhanced with ultra-pure processing, fine grain size, and micro-alloy strengthening, T4003 achieves improved mechanical performance and resistance to intergranular corrosion, particularly under chloride-containing environments.
Its primary application is in the transportation industry, where it is supplied in annealed–pickled coil form with a thickness range of 1.5 to 8.0 mm and widths up to 1500 mm. T4003 has been widely adopted in the fabrication of side walls, end walls, and floor panels of railway wagons, including for 70-ton open trucks. The metallographic structure shown at 200× magnification reveals a refined ferritic matrix, contributing to excellent durability and fatigue resistance during long-term service.
Compared to austenitic grades, T4003 offers a favorable balance of performance and affordability. It resists atmospheric and mildly corrosive environments while reducing material costs and maintenance demands. This makes it an ideal choice for components requiring high strength, moderate corrosion resistance, and long service life without the cost burden of higher-alloyed steels. Its economic advantages, combined with its lifecycle performance, position T4003 as a strategic material for rolling stock manufacturers and heavy-duty structural components exposed to varying environmental conditions.
